Jobs in hotels, catering, baking, and food & beverage — and how to get qualified.
Every hotel, restaurant, resort, hospital kitchen, school, and event company in Kenya needs trained hospitality staff. It's one of the few sectors where demand doesn't stop — people eat, travel, and host events every single day.
Yet many job seekers in this field are self-taught or informally trained, which limits them to entry-level, lower-paying roles. Formal, TVETA-accredited training is what opens the door to supervisory and specialist positions.
Here's a practical look at the career paths available and what it takes to get into each one.
Covers front office, housekeeping, guest services, and accommodation management. Graduates typically start as front office assistants, housekeeping staff, or guest-services attendants in hotels and lodges, progressing toward supervisory roles with experience.
The kitchen side of hospitality — commis chef, cook, or kitchen assistant roles in hotels, restaurants, institutions (schools, hospitals), and catering companies. Level 4 graduates with stronger culinary skills can move into more senior kitchen roles faster than Level 3 entrants.
One of the most flexible qualifications — bakery and pastry staff are needed by hotels, standalone bakeries, supermarkets, and hospitality outlets, and it's also one of the easiest hospitality skills to turn into a self-employed business (see our catering business guide for the self-employment route).
Restaurant and bar service, event service, and food & beverage outlet management. Strong customer-service and organizational skills make this a good fit for people who enjoy guest-facing work over kitchen work.
A more technical path — food processing, quality control, and food science, relevant to food manufacturing and processing companies as well as hospitality outlets with in-house production.
| Program | Level | Entry | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baking | Level 3 | KCPE | 2 Months |
| Food Production / Cookery | Level 3 | KCPE | 2 Months |
| Food Production / Cookery | Level 4 | Any KCSE | 3 Months |
| Baking / Baking Technology | Level 5 | KCSE D- and above | 1 Year |
| Catering & Accommodation | Level 5 | KCSE D- and above | 1 Year |
| Food Technology | Level 5 | KCSE D- and above | 1 Year |
| Food & Beverage Operations | Level 5 | KCSE D- and above | 1 Year |
Hospitality is one of the few technical fields where the same qualification supports both paths equally well. A Catering & Accommodation or Baking graduate can walk straight into a hotel job, or use the same skills to start a catering, bakery, or event-catering business — many graduates end up doing a bit of both over their career.
All MTTI Hospitality programs are TVETA-accredited (TVETA/PRIVATE/TVC/0023/2026), taught at our Sagaas Centre campus in Eldoret, and include hands-on practical training — not just classroom theory. Level 5 programs also include industrial attachment, so you graduate with real workplace experience already on your CV.
