Start with Your Entry Grade

Only have a KCPE certificate?

Your options are Baking (Level 3) or Food Production/Cookery (Level 3) — both are 2 months, KES 15,000, and get you a professional foundation fast. You can progress to Level 4 or 5 later once you have the required KCSE grade or more experience.

Have any KCSE grade (below D-)?

Food Production/Cookery (Level 4) is your best option — 3 months, more advanced culinary skills, kitchen management and menu development, and a stronger qualification than Level 3.

Have KCSE D- or above?

All five Level 5 programs are open to you — the choice then comes down to what you want to specialize in (see below), not entry requirements.

Choosing Between the Level 5 Programs

Choose Baking or Baking Technology if:
You want a highly practical, product-focused skill that's easy to turn into self-employment (a bakery, wedding cakes, pastry supply). Baking Technology adds more technical/industrial baking methods on top of the core Baking curriculum.
Choose Catering & Accommodation if:
You're interested in the guest-facing, hotel-operations side of hospitality — front office, housekeeping, guest services — rather than the kitchen. This is the broadest hospitality management qualification of the five.
Choose Food Technology if:
You're more interested in the science and quality-control side — food processing, standards, and production — useful if you're eyeing food manufacturing roles alongside hospitality ones.
Choose Food & Beverage Operations if:
You want to work restaurant/bar service, event service, or manage an F&B outlet — strong fit if you enjoy customer-facing service work over kitchen or back-office work.

Employment vs. Business Goals

If your main goal is starting your own business (bakery, catering company), Baking or Catering & Accommodation give you the most directly transferable skills — see our catering business startup guide.

If your main goal is getting employed in a hotel, resort, or restaurant, Catering & Accommodation or Food & Beverage Operations tend to open the widest range of entry-level roles — see our hospitality careers guide for a fuller breakdown of job paths.

Still Not Sure?

You don't have to decide alone. Talk to our admissions team about your KCSE grade, budget, and goals, and we'll help you pick the program that actually fits — not just the one with the flashiest name.
